Dear Ms. Jackson, You've exactly hit on why quality orthodontic treatment is not cheap!And you've found out the hard way that cutting costs is not always the best choice in health care. You describe a less-than-satisfactory experience having orthodontic treatment with your dentist, who tried to meet your treatment goals with Invisalign Express, although Invisalign advised him that Express treatment would not correct your malocclusion. From your description, it seems that your dentist succumbed to your pressure to keep costs low, and tried to treat you with a system that was inadequate for your problem.
I'm glad the you chose an orthodontist to provide your children's orthodontic care. "Knowing where to glue on the brackets" is only a small part of the diagnosis and treament planning necessary to correct a malocclusion. An orthodontist has 2 to 3 years of full-time university training in orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontic treatment fee does include such costs as employing trained staff members and making the office an enjoyable place for families to visit (i.e, the cookies you mention). In addition, most orthodontists enter practice today with educational debt in six figures (4 years of undergrad, 4 years of dental school, and 2 to 3 years of orthodontic training). And that's before setting up or buying a practice, buying a home, or starting a family!
I'm sorry that you have such a negative attitude toward orthodontists. I think it's a great service to provide people with beautiful, healthy smiles.
